New Clients
What to Expect as a New Client
Starting therapy can feel like a big step, especially if this is your first time or it's been a while. Here's what the process actually looks like.

The Process
From the first step to real progress.
A straightforward, supportive process designed to help you feel comfortable every step of the way.
1
Before Your First Session
Once you reach out, we'll get you scheduled and send over a short intake questionnaire ahead of time. It asks about what's bringing you to therapy, what you're hoping to get help with, how it's been affecting your day-to-day life, and any past experience with therapy or higher levels of care. It also includes a few standard safety questions — these are routine for every new client and simply help your therapist understand the full picture before you meet.
2
Your First Session
Your first session is mostly about your therapist getting to know you: what brought you in, what you've tried before, and what you're hoping is different on the other side of this. There's no pressure to have it all figured out — that's what the process is for.
3
How Often Will We Meet?
Most clients start weekly and adjust from there based on what's going on and what feels sustainable. We'll talk through frequency together based on your needs and goals.
Important
A Note on Safety
If you're currently in crisis or having thoughts of harming yourself or someone else, please contact 988 (Suicide & Crisis Lifeline) or go to your nearest emergency room. Our intake process is not a crisis service.
Frequently Asked Questions
You have questions—we have answers.
Do I need a referral to start therapy here?
No — you can reach out directly to schedule.
What if I've never done therapy before?
That's completely fine. Many of our clients are new to therapy, and your therapist will walk you through what to expect.
Can I switch therapists if it's not the right fit?
Yes. Fit matters, and we'd rather help you find the right match than have you stick with something that isn't working.
Do you offer virtual sessions?
Yes — Lightwork Counseling is available virtually anywhere in Massachusetts.
Do you work with men or couples?
We work exclusively with adult women in individual therapy.
What if I need more support than weekly therapy?
If you're looking for a higher level of care — like an IOP or dual-diagnosis program — our sister organization, Lightwork Therapy & Recovery, offers more structured support.
